Do You Know What is Commutative Property?

In Maths, we study one unique yet known property that deals with the arithmetic operation, this is known as the commutative property. It says that changing the order or the position of two or more numbers while we add or multiply them does not actually affect the end result. Either way reversed the answer will be the same. Like 5 + 6 = 11 also 6 + 5 = 11.

This same concept is similar for multiplication as well. 9 X 4 = 36 also, 4 X 9 = 36. While this is to be noticed that the commutative property does not work for subtraction or division. In the case of division or subtraction, the end results will be completely different.

How Would You Define the Commutative Property?

The word ‘commutative’ originated from the word ‘commute’ which means ‘move around’, thus commutative property deals with the moving numbers. The mathematical order might change but the result will definitely not change. Rest, there are other properties of numbers as well like:

  • Associative Property
  • Distributive Property
  • Identity Property

All these properties are different from the Commutative Property of numbers. In our next section, we will be discussing the commutative property of addition and multiplication.

Commutative Property of Addition and Multiplication

The commutative property of the addition is the changing order of the added numbers which in turn does not change the resultant value of the sum. There are times when we are required to add up more than two numbers, even then the commutative property holds true for adding up even a long list of numbers.

Suppose 40 + 80 + 10 = 130, also 10 + 40 + 80 = 130.

The commutative property also holds true in the case of multiplication. When we multiply two or more numbers and then reverse or re-arrange the numbers then we get the same result – 8 X 9 X 7 = 504, also 9 X 8 X 7 = 504.

What is Distributive Property?

The distributive property can also be referred to as the distributive law which defines multiplication, addition, and subtraction.  This name also signifies the operation which consists of dividing and also distributing the numbers. This distributive law is applicable as well over the addition and the subtraction.

What Does the Distributive Property States?

The distributive property states that an expression that is in the format of P(Q+R) can be solved by P(Q+R) = PQ + PR. This distributive law is also applied to the subtraction which is expressed in the form of P(Q-R) = PQ – PR. We see the variable P is being distributed between two variables.
