How to Clean Copper Utensils Naturally?

People choose Copper kitchen utensils to give luster and warmth to the kitchen. However, they do not understand the correct way to clean them.

Copper is a soft alloy and is known as the best conductor of heat. It needs extra TLC as compared to other metals. Hence, it is essential to care for and clean it rightly.  We have researched and found out the natural ways for copper utensils cleaning. Read on to find out!

Basic Rules to Care Copper Kitchen Utensils

By following these simple guidelines, you will be able to maintain the beautiful appearance of your copper items: 

  • If you use copper cookware, always keep it clean.
  • Clean and dry thoroughly after each use. 
  • When using copper utensils, it is not allowed to clean them with abrasive agents, compounds based on chlorine, ammonia, and other aggressive components. 
  • Also, do not clean copper utensils with hard brushes and scrapers. These products can damage the metal surface. 
  • For the same reason, it is worth refraining from using metal spoons and spatulas, giving preference to devices made of wood, plastic, or silicone.

Natural Cleaning Methods for Copper Kitchenware

Dishwashing liquid (to freshen up) 

This method is the simplest and is suitable for removing minor dirt and freshening up the copper kitchen wares. 

  • You will need: dishwashing liquid, pelvis, and a soft sponge
  • Fill a basin with warm water and add a few drops of detergent. Lather well. 
  • Place the Rounded Copper Jug in soapy water and leave for a while. Then take a sponge and remove the soggy dirt from the metal surface. 
  • At the end of the procedure, rinse the item thoroughly under running water and wipe dry. 

Citric acid (from green plaque) 

This method will help you cope with greenish bloom. 

  • You will need lemon acid and warm water (preferably distilled).
  • First, prepare a 10% citric acid solution. Mix 10 g of powder with 100 g of warm water. 
  • Place a copper utensil in the solution and observe it. You will see how the greens will separate from the metal surface and turn the liquid green. 
  • Once all plaque is dissolved, remove the copper vessel and rinse thoroughly under running water. 
  • If you don’t have citric acid on hand, rub the metal surface with half a lemon and leave it on for a while. 
  • Then rinse it.

Vinegar + salt (for dark spots) 

If dark oxide spots appear on copper products, we recommend the following method. 

  • Prepare the components: table vinegar and table or sea salt. 
  • Mix 1 cup of bite with 1 to 2 tbsp of salt. 
  • Without waiting for the salt to completely dissolve, place copper objects in this mixture and rub the surface of the products a little with salt. 
  • You will see the result instantly. There will be no trace of oxidation. After cleaning is complete, rinse items thoroughly and wipe dry. 

Tomato paste/ketchup (from black) 

This seemingly unusual method actually worked well for cleaning copper water bottles from blackness.

  • You will need: tomato paste or ketchup and a flap of cotton fabric. 
  • Apply a generous amount of ketchup to the copper utensil and let sit for 1 hour. 
  • After a while, rub the copper object well with a piece of cloth and rinse with water. 
  • This method will not only help to effectively remove stains but also return the brightness of the color to the metal.

Flour + salt + vinegar (for shine) 

This method will help you not only to wash away dirt but also give the product a dazzling shine. 

  • You will need: Wheat flour, salt, and table vinegar.
  • Mix the ingredients in equal parts and rub the copper Tawa with the resulting gruel. 
  • Leave it on for a while. 
  • Then rinse well under running water and wipe dry.

Salt + vinegar (for stubborn dirt) 

For old, stubborn dirt that is difficult to remove, we have a special method in store. 

  • You will need: salt, table vinegar
  • In a saucepan, mix half a glass of salt with a glass of vinegar and place a copper pan in the resulting solution. 
  • Place the container on fire and bring it to a boil. 
  • Turn off heat and leave to cool completely. 
  • Then remove the pan and rinse thoroughly with water.

How Usually Should Copper Utensils be Cleaned? 

It’s you wish to either clean the copper utensils on regular basis or not.  If it is about an aesthetic look, then, clean them frequently. However, as tarnish can be removed easily and does not give any adverse effect on the performance, so, you can keep the copper kitchen utensils unwashed for some time.

Though, it does not mean that you will not wash the copper vessel for a longer time. Do not let the tarnish get worsen.  Examine your schedule of cleaning and maintain the cleanliness and shine of your copper kitchenware.
